Canal Street Historic District

The Canal Street Historic District has all the charms of an old-Florida hometown that’s being revamped. It quickly is becoming known as the area’s “arts and design district.” Art galleries and artist workshops, interior design studios and architects, and antique shops and emporiums generate a vibrant, creative atmosphere and contribute to the district’s artsy reputation.

From stately furniture to tableware, antique lovers will relish their finds on Historic Canal Street.Exhibits in the “Arts District” attract gallery visitors.

Dress shops, sidewalk dining, bakeries, an Irish pub, professional offices and personal services add to the interesting mix along Canal Street.

A family-friendly venue that’s fun to experience on foot or bicycle, Canal Street has long been a favorite Saturday morning destination. That’s when dozens of vendors set up at Old Fort Park for the weekly Farmers Market. The palm-lined main street is the backdrop of popular monthly events including the Gallery Walk with live music in Christmas Park and the Classic Car Show. Several large-scale special events also are staged in the Canal Street Historic District throughout the year.

With architecture emanating from the early 20th century, many enjoy strolling the district’s side streets to take in residential architecture nestled among mossy oaks. Others head to Old Fort Park to gaze at the century-old ruins of a coquina hotel that sits on a hill overlooking the city marina. The New Smyrna Historical Museum also welcomes visitors who are curious to learn why many feel the area is as old as St. Augustine.
